Background:
At Save the Children. Together, we fight for children every single day so that they can make their mark on the world and build a better future. This role will be based in our Smallshaw-Hurst Team which is responsible for working with partners to create fairer childhoods by tackling poverty and ensuring all children have the start in life.
Job Purpose:
We are looking for an individual who is interested in gaining experience in working in the charitable sector to join us for 6 months as a Community Development Assistant to support our work.
Smallshaw-Hurst Children's Community works with people and organisations in the communities of Ashton Under-Lyne to collectively deliver better outcomes for children and young people. Our vision is to close the gap between outcomes for children growing up in poverty and their more affluent peers.
To help us understand our communities ‘Story of Place', we would like to engage a Kickstart role as part of this pioneering piece of work that supports and underpins the work of the Children's Community.
The role is a really exciting opportunity, working alongside our current community development practitioner to develop skills and competence around community engagement and development work, whilst gaining experience and knowledge in a highly concentrated way to truly understand the lived experience of families, children and young people.
Key Accountabilities:
· Shape the work of the Smallshaw-Hurst Children's Community
· Develop a local plan led by the community, for the community to support better outcomes for children and young people
· Support and further build the inherent assets of the community – its people
· Connect community members in a meaningful way to governance structures that support the system of children and young people's services and provisions in a locality.
Positive attitude, flexibility, and an interest in learning will be key elements in making the role work, and you'll also need a willingness to work positively with others from across the organisation.
We're looking for someone who is committed to the vision, mission, values and approach of Save the Children, and who is happy to follow our policies around safeguarding, managing risk and our code of conduct.
In return we'll provide you with training in all aspects of the role, as well as weekly programme of sessions which we'd design for you to help build your wider skills and experience.
Essential Technical Competencies:
· Great customer service and administration skills
· Good working knowledge of computer software systems (e.g. Microsoft Office)
· Good literacy skills
Behavioural Competencies:
· Critical thinking and problem solving
· Interest in learning
· Organisation
· Professionalism and work ethic
· Teamwork and collaboration
· Willingness to work positively with others
In your application we'd encourage you to show us how you can work effectively with people from a range of backgrounds, your interest in the issues that Save the Children works on, and if you have any previous volunteer experience of charity fundraising, campaigning, and volunteering.
If you have a disability, wellbeing or mental health issue, we can help you by making reasonable adjustments to remove or reduce barriers you might be facing in submitting your application.
Remote Working:
The majority of SCUK employees are currently working remotely within the UK in line with UK Government guidance. Commencing July 2021 we will transition to flexible and hybrid ways of working (i.e. a mixture of remote/home and office-based working) as social distancing restrictions ease.
We are happy to discuss flexible working options at interview.
Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion:
Save the Children UK is committed to diversity and equality of opportunity in all aspects of our work both external and internal. We strive to be an inclusive employer and particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups such as returning parents or carers who are re-entering work after a career break, people who are LGBT+, from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, with a disability, impairment, learning difference or long-term condition, with caring responsibilities, from different nations and regions, and from less advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
