Project Manager (Engineering) (297jc) – Manchester/Hybrid – circa £60k + Benefits
My client is a leading provider of communications, SCADA and instrumentation solutions. Working with industrial sectors as diverse as water, power, utilities, corporate business, broadcasting and public safety organisations, they have a track record stretching back to the early 1980s and a management team with a wealth of industry experience.

Overview of role:
The principal objective of the role is to manage the successful deployment of company integrated solutions to agreed timescales, budgeted costs and the required quality levels. The Project Manager provides the principle point of contact for the customer throughout the lifecycle of the project and ensures the successful handover to the customer support group on final acceptance.
Responsibilities:
The Project Managers responsibilities cover the following seven key areas
- Customer Management
- Project Delivery
- Assigned Resource and Third-Party Management
- Risk Management
- Change Control
- Cost Control
- Quality Assurance
Customer Management
- Provide the principle point of contact for the customer throughout the project.
- With the Sales/ Account Manager and Pre-Sales Technical Specialists (where applicable) ensure that project deliverables are clearly defined, and agreed with the customer at the initiation phase of the project
- With the Sales /Account Manager and Support team ensure any deployed projects are incorporated within existing or new customer support agreements/contracts
- Provide and manage the conduit for all communication written and oral with the customer in relation to the Project
- Ensure the customers’ expectations are set and effectively managed
- Build and maintain the required processes between other offices
- Agree with the customer the terms or reference, project plan, reporting and planning methodologies to be adopted during the course of the project.
Project Delivery
Principle responsibility to deliver the project to the customer’s satisfaction through:
- Working with the customer to define and agree a project schedule encompassing all project activities, milestones and key dependencies
- Identification and effective management of any required deviations from the agreed project schedule
- Principle ownership to the customer in relation to all issues that arise during the course of the project, throughout its lifecycle
- Work with all areas within the company to ensure the timely resolution of any identified issues to the customers satisfaction
- Ensure that all necessary post live operational support requirements are in place to facilitate customer support
- Providing periodic progress reports on the performance of the project against the agreed deliverables to the customer, and Operations Management.
- Be proactive in recommending alternate solutions, to overcome delays incurred during the course of project.
Resource & third-party Vendor Management
- Working with Operations team ensure that the assigned resources have the appropriate skills/experience to undertake the project and are managed effectively
- Ensure that the assigned resources understand company’s obligations under the contract and the agreed deliverables
- Provide day to day management of any assigned engineering resource
- Manage through to resolution any issues that are identified by the assigned engineer
- Provide the principle point of liaison between my client and any third party required during the course of the project
- Ensure the timely procurement, and logistics of all third-party hardware and services required to meet the deliverables of the project
Risk Management
- Identify, track all risks that may potentially impact upon the deliverables of the project, and analyse the technical, financial, time and customer relationship implications
- Instigate contingency plans in to mitigate any identified risks.
- Discuss and agree contingency plans with the customer to mitigate any financial penalties that may be incurred as result of the deliverables not being met
- Change Control
- Identify changes in project scope or the deliverables and negotiate variations in cost and time with the customer (with assistance with the Sales/Account Manager where necessary)
- Identify variations and or changes in project scope brought about by delays to agreed project schedule (i.e. increase in project timescale, abortive site visits etc)
- Negotiate variations to contract with the customer where my client is required to assist the customer or other customer third parties in the resolution of inter working or third-party issues which clearly outside the scope of company responsibility
- Ensure any agreed variation is covered by a customer instruction accepting any cost and time implications
- Identify and communicate other business opportunities during the course of the project to the Sales / Account Manager
Cost Control
- Manage the Project finances, including third party costs to ensure estimated margins are achieved
- Provide authorisation for all project related costs during the lifecycle of the Project
- Conduct monthly financial forecasts of projected margin at completion, throughout the project lifecycle.
- Raise requests for and or applications for payment at the identified payment milestones.
- Liaise with the finance department to gain an awareness of the project cash flow and working capital
- Negotiate on project completion a final account of all variations incurred during the life cycle of the project
Quality Assurance
- Manage the project in accordance with the company project management processes
- Liaise with Support to ensure the appropriate support arrangements are in place at final acceptance.
Essential Experience
- Minimum of three years’ experience of Project Management in the IT / Telecom sectors working on external projects
- Knowledge, background of engineering – control system solutions/automation
- Experience/Understanding of SCADA, PLC’s, HMI would be beneficial
- Proven Project Management skills within a commercial environment
- Experienced in the application of Project Management methodologies
- External customer management experience.
- APMP or Prince 2 qualified
- NEC3 Contract management experience
- CDM Management experience
- As well as the ability to keep abreast of technological changes and trends within the Telecoms industry.
Interpersonal Skills
- Ability to broker a position between commercial/technical & customer objectives.
- Well-developed formal and oral communication and reporting Skills to all levels in a organisation
- Good “relationship” and people-management skills
- Highly organised work approach within a multi-tasking environment
- Ability to find inventive solutions, and to lead/steer discussions to deliver win-win scenarios
